However, the Theme is not Rococo in origin, but actually an original theme in the Rococo style. Variations on a Rococo Theme is a piece of music for cello and orchestra composed by Pyotr Ilyich is one of the most popular pieces of music for cello and orchestra.

Tchaikovsky never composed a cello concerto, but he did write this work, which is a tune with a set of is called "Rococo" because the music is based on the style that was popular in the late 18th. There are seven variations in all. The first two, which are marked Tempo del tema, are ornamental and elegant in style.

The third variation, Andante sostenuto, in the key of C major, is a waltz; the Rococo theme is artfully dislocated, altering the metrical position of the cadences; in this new guise it assumes the character of a Russian folk song. The rococo theme itself is a simple one and if it tips its hat to the eighteenth century -- and Tchaikovsky's musical idol, Mozart-- it is thoroughly Tchaikovskyian and utterly Romantic.
